For those who are looking to develop a writing career, you may be impressed to know that the web offers a variety of opportunities for the aspiring writer. You might even have the necessary experience for a way to venture out. The best way to become a good writer is to try something new or different. The web offers a variety of jobs that can help you to explore your writing career in many ways.

Online writing jobs are out there, but it is first important to know what the difference is in writing for the web and writing for the print industries. First off, writing online is less formal, very much so. You will find that people use the word "you" often, which is often completely forbidding in print writing. In another way, content writing jobs online are jobs that require you to engage the reader as if you were speaking to them as a friend, not as an authority figure. This soft, engaging content is what people want to read and expect to read when they visit a website. It can be very difficult for the average writer who has spent years perfecting their tone and message to change so much so that they are now writing in a completely different style.

Perhaps you are interested in getting a few content writing jobs. These are jobs where you will help to develop content for websites. Content is a term used to describe the written word on each page of a website. Webmasters, who often build and manage the websites, do not necessarily have the ability, time, or willingness to manage their own content. They do not want to write it themselves and therefore hire those who have experience writing for the web to do it. This is where you come in. The fact of the matter is, once you master the techniques of writing for website content, you can start writing for any of the millions of websites that are available online.

Perhaps you were hoping for creative writing jobs, online. You can find these, too. Chances are good, though, that you will find opportunities are less frequent in this industry at least online. On the other hand, you can also find a variety of jobs for print publication that are advertised online rather than in standard job classifieds or other forms. Not only do people come online to read and work through the online medium, but they also use the web as a place to find professionals for print work. This may be one of the best ways to find creative writing jobs online.

Another area to be concerned with when it comes to online writing jobs is that the pay is far different. Online writing jobs do pay much lower, especially for those with little to no experience writing for the web. While you may make $2 or $3 per word in print publications, or more, online, you may make two to three cents per word when you are just starting out, often times much lower. This may seem like a shock, but the bulk amount of work available and the less amount of research that is required do help to make up for the difference here.

How can you advance your writing career online? One way is to start applying with and working for well-known industries online. Many of the largest news industries have a variety of websites that they own and manage. You may not know them by name, but you likely use them daily. The key to getting online is to get your name on your work. Owning the credit to your work is another area that is different in online work as compared to work in print. Online, you will often work as a ghostwriter, providing material for those who work in the industry that they can call their own (after they pay you for it, of course.)

To advance your career, look for online writing jobs that give you a byline, which means they give you the ability to claim the work as your own. You may want to start your own blog. You may want to develop your own website. These are just some of the ways to start making a name online. Best of all, no matter if you get into content writing jobs or creative writing jobs, one thing is for sure. There are hundreds if not thousands of positions available each day to those who can do the work and do well.

Start learning the ropes. Develop relationships with clients and work to get your name out there, in the pages of websites large and small. It may take time to advance forward in your career. Soon, you will become well known in the industry and you will find yourself developing contacts throughout it. Just like in print, it is often best to spend at least a bit of your time networking with others so that you can build a successful business for yourself. There are writings earning full time incomes from their online writing jobs. This could be just where you want to be.
