Let us take you extensively into the job hunt-what kind of jobs are available and how to locate them. They often list the duties and the required experience and show you the different environments and specializations in which technical writers work. You can find job advertisements in any Sunday newspaper, as well as on the Internet. The Society for Technical Communication maintains an active database of job openings in eight different regions across the United States and Canada.

Position: Junior Technical Writer Job Type: Permanent Company: Software developer Location: Canada

Duties: Software company is looking for a full-time junior technical writer to join our documentation team. The junior technical writer is part of a team responsible for writing, editing, and formatting a variety of technical documents, including user guides, requirement documents, Tech Notes, white papers, on-line help, internal policy documents, and some technical marketing documents. The junior technical writer is expected to perform any of the following: technical writing, technical editing, indexing, desktop publishing (document design), web-page development, on-line help development

Requirements: The junior technical writer must have a uni-versity degree, some training in technical documentation, and a solid understanding of computers and computing technology. He/she also should have one to three years experience as a documentation specialist/technical writer in the computer industry or a related field. A good understanding of software concepts is required.

Tool skills: Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Frame Maker, Microsoft Word, and a graphics application such as Paint Shop Pro.

Position: Publications Manager

Job Type: Permanent

Company: A business communications firm

Location: Northeast

Duties: The successful candidate will take charge of all of the editorial and management functions associated with the copy-editing, production, promotion, e.g., news releases, and vending of high technology market research publications and periodicals. Additional responsibilities will include copy editing as needed, PR, supervisory functions dealing with vendors, and client liaison. Will perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements: The successful candidate will have a minimum of three years of publishing experience, including supervisory experience; excellent writing and people skills; imagination; and a broad-based familiarity with nomenclature used in the physical and life sciences. Should be very computer literate, including sound knowledge of MS Word at a minimum and preferably the PC/Mac environment and Windows. This position reports directly to the company president.

Duties: Seeking an adjunct to teach an introductory technical writing course as part of a technical writing and communications focus in a bachelor's degree program for adult students.

Requirements: Candidate should have a master's degree, teaching experience, and experience in professional technical writing.

Position: Technical Writer Job Type: Permanent Company: Financial research company Location: Midwest

Duties: One of the leading suppliers of on-line financial information to the investment community, is a growing company with approximately 300 employees in nine locations around the world. We are currently looking for a highly motivated, detail-oriented technical writer to work with our quantitative services group. Responsibilities include making users' experience with our software as easy and efficient as possible by researching, writing, and editing HTML based on-line help, application manuals, and product sheets.

Requirements: Experience in writing and editing software documentation, plus a bachelor's degree. Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. Ability to work in a dynamic and information-intensive environment. An interest in computers, technology, and finance. Finance and/or math knowledge desired, but not required.

Position: Senior Technical Writer Job Type: Contract Company: E-commerce company Location: Northwest

Duties: A senior technical writer is required for a fast-paced, quickly growing, 300-employee, e-commerce company. The successful candidate will work with another senior technical writer to co-ordinate technical documentation enterprise-wide.

Work with program managers to identify and write templates for commonly required procedural and technical documents. Work with program managers to schedule and edit developer-written design specifications. Work with documentation team to choose, set up, and maintain a company-wide knowledge base application. Sometimes prepare white papers or visually appealing graphics on e-commerce architectures.

Requirements: B.A. in English or related field. Interest in e-commerce. Excellent communication skills with developers and others. (Speak geek but write clear English quickly.) Should have experience working with developers in helping them produce software design specifications. Should have experience with Internet-based software development environments. Should know your way around client/server, data-base-driven Internet application development and know what is involved in documenting it adequately. Should have strategies for dealing with differences between shrink-wrapped versus Internet service-based software environments. Should know the tools of the trade quite well: Word, Visio, RoboHELP or equivalent, html-based Help, graphics packages, and MS Project. Should have some experience with EDMS. Should know at least one programming language, preferably Java. Should know way around an NT network and ideally should also have UNIX experience.
