Development and Alumni Relations (DEVAR) office provides leadership in building enduring public trust, understanding, and support for UC Davis and its mission of teaching, research, and public service. DEVAR manages fundraising campaigns for the central campus, alumni services, and other opportunities of engagement for UC Davis retirees, friends, students and volunteer leaders. There are three functional units within the office of Development and Alumni Relations: Alumni Relations, University Development and Retirees Center. A cornerstone of the DEVAR communications and marketing team, assist with achieving the fundraising and alumni engagement goals of Development & Alumni Relations (DEVAR) by creating marketing and communication materials that promote a compelling brand for the university, with an emphasis on helping to build UC Davis' private philanthropic identity, one that will drive continuous, loyal support for the University now and in the coming years. Under the supervision of the Senior Manager of Marketing and Communications for Development and Alumni relations, will create and execute multiple, strategic communication pieces designed to build the philanthropic brand, increase contributions, steward donors and build alumni and parent engagement. Act as lead writer on major communication materials including press releases, feature stories, web content, brochures, advertisements, news stories and other communication materials that will be distributed to a variety of audiences including all UC Davis alumni, UC Davis parents and/ or all of UC Davis donor base including top-level individual, foundation and corporate donors and donor prospects. In addition, write philanthropic or alumni-related material for university-wide initiatives in collaboration with Strategic Communications office. This will require drafting scripts and talking points on behalf of university leadership including the Chancellor. Also, project manage multiple projects working relationships internal and external photographic, design and web talent to create thoughtful and well-orchestrated communication materials for the university's billion-dollar-plus comprehensive campaign and other fundraising and alumni engagement purposes.
Must provide own transportation to off-site events and meetings.
Work hours outside standard 8AM-5PM schedule.

Strong writing skills, including the use of language accurately and creatively; to prepare information in appropriate form for diverse audiences and purposes; to recognize and use correct grammar; to spell and punctuate correctly; and to understand, use and translate academic and technical terminology and concepts into lay terms.
Experience writing for a variety of different publications and purposes including scripts, press releases, feature stories (long and short), websites, brochures, advertisements, letters, executive documents, etc.
Extensive professional writing experience. Experience editing and proofing copy.
Interpersonal and oral communication skills to work effectively with a variety of people to set up interviews for stories, gather information from interview subjects, and integrate feedback on written work from multiple stakeholders.
Experience interviewing diverse subjects with diplomacy for profile stories and verifying factual accuracy of information through basic research.
Knowledge of development and its role in the advancement of a public university.
Skill in determining inspiring, diverse directions for articles and other copy to meet institutional advancement objectives and help build a culture of philanthropy at UC Davis.
Skills to synthesize ideas and direction from multiple project stakeholders.
Experience meeting tight deadlines and balancing multiple projects and priorities simultaneously, with minimal supervision, and coordinating the work of contributors with attention to detail, while completing projects with excellence Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge and understanding of fund raising and experience in formulating results-oriented fund raising communication strategies for a variety of audiences.
Experience establishing and maintaining productive working relationships with campus constituencies, donors and alumni.
Experience working with editors and writers, graphic designers, Web editors, videographers, and photographers.
