Job Description
The Writing Consultant I is responsible for: consulting face-to-face or online with students in the Writing Center about writing and public speaking; maintaining records of consultations; presenting at events and workshops including workshops for Honor Code remediation; attending training and staff meetings; and assisting with reception as needed. The Writing Consultant I will serve as a Team leader; will assist with training consultants; and will develop materials used in teaching, consulting, or marketing. In addition, the Writing Consultant I will serve as a night supervisor as needed and will cross train and communicate with other Writing Consultants to maintain business continuity and promote a team environment.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelors degree in any field.
Experience as a writer, editor (digital text included), teacher of writing or public speaking, or tutor/administrator in a writing, speaking, or learning center.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Excellent writing & oral and written communication skills, knowledge of writing basics.
Experience tutoring or teaching writing and/or speaking.
Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
Other Requirements:
May require working evening hours, including Sunday evenings. Must work Wednesday mornings 8 to 10 am.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Basic knowledge of new media such as audio or video production and editing.
Skill in Adobe Creative Suite, web design or html, content management systems, spreadsheets.
Keeps records of consultations. Assists with scheduling, especially by rearranging appointments when consultants are ill or request leave. Assists with organizing programs such as Dissertation and Thesis Writing Retreats, Midterm Madness and Final Paper Countdown. Assists with the organization and distribution of team leader and staff meeting agenda and coordinates with presenters.
Assists with advanced tutoring of students regarding their writing, speaking and audio/video skills. Fills in for writing consultants on the schedule due to illness or other absence.
Serves as Team Leader for peer tutors, which includes conducting student worker annual performance evaluations and writing monthly performance records. Provides feedback to writing center consultants regarding their tutoring performance and other job duties. Provides supplemental projects for consultants to work on when they are not conducting sessions. Maintains a productive work environment in the writing consultant area. Serves as the center evening supervisor as needed. Approves leave requests.
Assists in training new writing center student consultants and provides ongoing training and professional development for current consultants. Presents at staff training sessions and team meetings when needed.
Conducts classroom workshops and attends other presentations and conferences on campus. Assists with writing groups or events as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned.
