Job Description:

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Development Communications Manager, the Development Communications Associate/Writer researches, writes, edits and manages a high volume of development-related articles, online content, publications, speaking remarks and other materials for the Office of External Affairs. This position is a primary writer of development-related talking points and speaking remarks for the Dean and senior leadership, and a key point person for multiple Development publications related to a variety of donor affinity groups.

Position Activities

· Writes and edits polished and engaging development stories and additional materials for donors, prospective donors, leadership, administrators, faculty, students, alumni and other patrons of the Weill Cornell Medicine. Actively engages in all parts of the writing process with close attention to detail—including research, story ideation and development, writing high quality pieces and editing.

· Writes development-related speaking remarks and reports for Weill Cornell leadership, including the Dean, senior staff and board members that emphasize Weill Cornell Medicine’s strategic messages of excellence in research, student education and medical care.

· Interfaces directly with Weill Cornell Medicine’s major donors, physician-scientists, senior leadership, faculty, staff and students to craft quotes, remarks and articles for publications.

· Manages photographers and graphic designers to create engaging and polished layout and design of development editorial and advertorial pieces for publications including Weill Cornell Medicine magazine, newsletters, brochures, proposals and other projects. Hires, schedules and supervises photographers for editorial projects.

· Interfaces directly with Weill Cornell’s major donors, physician-scientists, senior leadership, faculty, staff and students to craft quotes, remarks and articles for publications.

· Works with Development Communications colleagues to oversee the content development and maintenance for the Giving and Alumni websites. Updates all photos and content using CMS system (Drupal). Manages development-related digital and social media content.

· Oversees the production schedule for a range of editorial materials and projects, including the Philanthropist, Partners in Medicine and Children’s Health Council newsletters and other projects and publications. Manages publication schedule, layout, text editing and design process and secures all necessary approvals to meet strict deadlines.

· Conducts fact checking, proofs and implements departmental style guide for a variety of departmental materials, including articles, event invitations and programs.

· Attends development-related events as assigned.

· Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Minimum Requirements

· Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications or similar field.

· Three to five years minimum related work experience in communications, preferably in a fundraising environment for a health-related non-profit, or in a public relations firm working closely with health-related clients.

· Prior experience writing speeches and remarks.

· Experience in writing published stories for the health and medical fields.

· Experience writing for and updating web and social media sites.

Highly Desired Requirements

· Master's Degree.

Skill and Abilities

· Excellent computer skills (PC and Mac) including MS Office, HTML, Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator.

· Strong writing and oral communications skills, including the proven ability to interpret medical and technical language for a general audience.

· Excellent interpersonal skills, including a demonstrated ability to work with a wide range of constituents including senior fundraisers and officers, volunteers, donors, physicians, scientists, and vendors.
