Our headquarters are in San Francisco with offices in Anchorage, Juneau, Los Angeles, Miami, Tallahassee, Honolulu, New York, Philadelphia, Denver, Seattle, Bozeman, and Washington, DC.This position is primarily responsible for writing blog posts and print magazine articles as well as ghost-writing articles for our lawyers. The role also includes significant production management of our quarterly print magazine along with some light administrative duties tied to the magazine. The associate writer will also help with social media copywriting, promotion strategizing, fact-checking, and occasional editing. Responsibilities Writing (65%)Serve as a writer on the small editorial team within Earthjustice’s communications department. The focus will be on rapid-response online content including blogs, explainers, columns, and Q&As that are tied to news events and our casework. Much of this work will require getting up to speed on a new issue and turning around a draft in a short time frame.Refresh or rewrite extensive evergreen feature content.Contribute writing and creative input to Earthjustice Quarterly Magazine, including front-of-the-book and back-of-the-book sections, captions and headlines, and the occasional feature.Generate story ideas based on news events, trends within our casework, advocacy goals, conversations with our attorneys, and audience data. Writing will be a mix of assigned and pitched stories.Write copy for Instagram Stories, readable videos, infographics, and other multimedia content.Brainstorm compelling social media headlines and teasers in conjunction with our social media team to help promote articles.Collaborate with our marketing team to understand audience segments and search for external content partnerships.Production Management (25%)Ensure stories, photos, infographics, advertisements, and layout produced by the magazine team are moving forward on time to hit our printing-press deadline.Communicate deadlines, roadblocks, changes to keep work flowing smoothly across the team.Set up a series of meetings needed for the team to collaborate.Be a main point of contact for our printer and print broker.Perform some administrative tasks such as mailing courtesy copies, distributing magazines internally, archiving PDFs, etc.Editing (10%)Conduct developmental or copy edits as needed if the editors have a temporary need for extra capacity or if existing content needs a quick refresh.Fact-check some of our magazine and explainer content.QualificationsBA, preferably in Communications, Journalism, English or related field.Three to six years of professional experience in online or print content production preferred; background and/or interest in environmental or social justice issues a plus.Critical thinker, highly competent at understanding, connecting, distilling, and effectively communicating complex issues to a lay audience.Excellent interpersonal skills with the confidence to interact effectively with all levels of management, staff, and external partners. Must be able to interview people from all backgrounds and receive editing constructively.Excellent writing, taking joy in the written word to create engaging headlines, apt phrases, and memorable storytelling.Broad knowledge of AP style.Ability to turn around reporting, writing, editing changes quickly.Project management skills including ability to break a larger task into smaller pieces, team communication, and problem solving.Ability to juggle fast turnaround individual assignments while managing deadlines on longer team projects.Ability to edit others’ writing and communicate with the writer effectively.Strong collaborator, able to pitch ideas and provide regular project updates to cross-functional peers.Proven willingness to seek appropriate direction and guidance from supervisors when needed.
