HNTB is currently seeking a Technical Writer
in our Washington, D.C.
This position is an excellent opportunity to join our multi-disciplined team co-located with a major transit agency in Washington, DC. The overall objective of this position is to contribute to the agencyâ€™s success through quality improvement initiatives and action plans to ensure safety, reliability, and customer satisfaction.
This position is responsible for developing technical documents such as contracts, specifications, requests for proposals, reports, and other documents. Will also perform editing, formatting and conducting quality audits to ensure consistency in the written project communication materials.
Writes content for contracts, specifications, and requests for proposals.
Edits and formats content written by others for contracts, specifications, requests for proposals, and reports, ensuring consistency in writing style and approach throughout various procurement documents, authored by different authors.
Performs document control tasks, such as setting up and maintaining file structures and file sharing sites. Ensures all produced materials are properly versioned and stored in appropriate location within SharePoint.
Prepares graphics as needed for reports and other documents.
Gathers information through research, statistical reports, and interviews with technical staff.
Performs quality audits working with team members to verify compliance with stated requirements of project and company guidelines.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Researches, develops, drafts, and updates technical documents such as standard operating procedures, operations administrative procedures, maintenance and operations procedures, instructional manuals, handbooks, specifications, technical/safety bulletins, work instructions, checklists, reports, and other documents.
Prepares graphical images, flow charts, and diagrams.
Gathers information from sources, such as regulatory agencies, oversight bodies, and subject matter experts.
Observes maintenance, operations, production, and service, activities to document procedures and processes in clear concise language for a wide audience.
2 years of Technical Writing experience
In lieu of education, 6 years of Technical Writing experience
Solid command of the English language, grammar, and style guidelines is required.
Good verbal communication skills and collaboration skills are also critical.
Can grasp and interpret technical and abstract ideas.
Proactively assesses quality, safety, and reliability issues.
Works well in a balanced work environment with a mix of team-based assignments with internal departments and external agencies, as well as can work independently.
Listens to understand and asks clarifying questions.
Takes personal accountability for results by scheduling work assignments, assessing the level of effort required, then delivering on time.
Manages multiple priorities, and deliverables simultaneously through planning and preparation.
Facilitates the continuous improvement of work processes.
Possesses knowledge of rapid transit systems, planning, engineering, construction, maintenance, and/or operations.
General Work Conditions
Office Environment: Work is generally performed in an office environment in which there is only minimal exposure to potentially unpleasant working conditions. Incumbent must have the ability to stand and sit frequently, and reach horizontally as well as vertically for overhead use.
