09-18 Job Description

The Advocacy Editor is responsible for identifying potential sources for articles in

AAFP News,

the Academy's official news publication, about federal and state legislative and regulatory issues in relation to family physicians and AAFP policy. The Advocacy Editor also creates an all-member enewsletter related to AAFP advocacy. He or she researches topic ideas, develops contacts within and outside the AAFP, conducts interviews, and conceptualizes and writes a variety of content, including news, feature and analysis articles, and email on advocacy work for AAFP members. He or she travels frequently to Washington and other locations; shoots photo and video, and identifies stock art to pair with writing; and works with graphic designers to develop original art. He or she tracks trends in legislation, policy and medicine, and analyzes what they will mean for family physicians, the AAFP and our member communications. Approximately 25 days travel annually.

Required Experience

This position requires a Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English or related field, plus 4-6 years of journalism or corporate experience, including editing; writing news, feature and analysis articles; publication production; photojournalism skills; and proofreading. Strongly preferred: working knowledge of various communication disciplines, including social media, public relations, and executive communications; health reporting background; business-to-business, nonprofit or association experience. Must have experience in covering health care issues in legislative, regulatory and health policy context. Must have knowledge of the health care system; physician issues; legislative/regulatory processes; digital photography; and writing for physician publications. Other requirements: research skills (medical literature, Internet); basic statistical skills (to interpret study data); strong organizational skills; strong interpersonal communications skills for regular contact with AAFP Board members, other AAFP members, staff, and the public; and ability to meet multiple deadlines, to work as a team member, and to perform tasks independently, especially when on assignment away from an AAFP office. Strong computer skills in Microsoft Suite needed. The physical ability and stamina to travel, to lift approximately 35 pounds (camera, computer), to work long hours, and to proofread detailed and lengthy copy required.
